I kept trying to connect to a Windows computer (on which I was pretty sure I remembered my password) using samba's smbclient, and I kept getting errors:
[karelsf@squirrel karelsf]$ smbclient -L NMCHNGD -U karelsf
INFO: Debug class all level = 1 (pid 23255 from pid 23255)
added interface ip=129.64.81.16 bcast=129.64.81.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Got a positive name query response from 129.64.99.15 ( 129.64.555.555 )
Password:
session setup failed: ERRSRV - 2242
what was I doing wrong? |
My password had expired.

To change a password remotely with samba (on the Windows machine 'NMCHNGD'):
[karelsf@chipmunk karelsf]$ smbpasswd -r NMCHNGD
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Password changed for user karelsf
[karelsf@chipmunk karelsf]$

Well, that worked once.
Now it appears my USERS domain password has expired, and the same trick doesn't work. I've tried specifying username KAREL and/or USERS\KAREL and/or karel. According to this list of network errors at Microsoft error 2221 should be "The user name could not be found".
I tried a couple of the obvious things from my XP box to connect to the USERS domain to change my password, but couldn't find one (this all started because I was trying to join my computer to USERS... -- silly me).
[karelsf@squirrel karelsf]$ smbpasswd -r WOODSTOCK -U KAREL
INFO: Debug class all level = 1 (pid 4732 from pid 4732)
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
machine WOODSTOCK rejected the password change: Error was : code 2221.
Failed to change password for KAREL

Your password is probably locked due to too many incorrect attempts. An idle, logged-in Windows computer will keep trying the old password in the background; you can't stop it. My VMWare image always used to disable my password when it woke from sleep.
Make sure you're logged out *everywhere*, wait an hour, and then you ought to be able to change your password. If not, you need to wait for an NT administrator to unlock your account. No way to do that through Samba. |

For the record, I managed to change my password by walking over to the Feldberg cluster and trying to log into the USERS domain from one of the PCs there. |
